Jönköping University is a private, non-profit foundation university in Jönköping, southern Sweden — one of only three independent Swedish higher education institutions with the right to award doctorates. Its roots run back to nursing education in 1897 and teacher training in 1947 and 1963; Jönköping University College was created as a state institution in 1977, and on 1 July 1994 the Swedish government converted it into an independent foundation. Doctoral awarding rights followed in 1995. The institution is organised as a non-profit corporate group comprising the School of Health and Welfare, School of Education and Communication, Jönköping International Business School, School of Engineering, University Services and Jönköping University Enterprise. It reports 15,209 registered students and about 803 full-time-equivalent staff including 55 full professors. Internationalisation is a defining feature: roughly 2,700 international students from around 100 countries study there, supported by some 320 partner universities and about 1,000 partner companies. The compact campus sits close to central Jönköping between lakes Vättern and Munksjön.
