Founded in 1477, Uppsala University is the oldest university in Sweden and the Nordic countries. It is a comprehensive, state-run research university organised into three disciplinary domains and nine faculties, covering humanities and social sciences, medicine and pharmacy, and science and technology. The university reports 53,767 registered students, around 2,415 doctoral students, 152 doctoral subject areas and roughly 7,500 employees. Teaching and research are spread across the historic city centre of Uppsala — including the University Main Building, the Gustavianum museum and the Carolina Rediviva library — plus the Biomedical Centre, the Ångström Laboratory and the English Park campus, together with a campus on the island of Gotland in Visby.
